  1.  Update on LMS Work Group
    1. The LMS Work Group derives its authority from LRCCD R-7145 (see 4.1.1 http://losrios.edu/legal/Regulations/R-7000/R-7145.pdf). FLC is being represented on the work group by Zack Dowell, Gary Hartley, Jennifer Kraemer and Ian Wallace.  Zack Dowell is also the LRCFT representative on the work group.
    2. At the first meeting of the work group, the body decided to look at Instructure Canvas not in a vacuum, but within the larger context of the Online Education Initiative, which includes a suite of free and reduced-cost services, including tutoring and support (see https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1HizVK87qvsbHZvUGRVOVBPNHc/view?usp=sharing).
    3. The committee is currently reviewing “DRAFT Los Rios LMS Selection Criteria” (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1HizVK87qvselY0Q0VZMzlZSkU/view?usp=sharing) which will be used to evaluate Canvas.

Thinking of offering a hybrid or online course, but don’t know where to begin?  Start here.
10-11AM in FL1-130 (Innovation Center)

December 4 – D2L Crash Course
If you plan to spend your Winter Break working on your online or hybrid class, and want a crash course in D2L, this is the workshop for you.  The first half will be useful if you’re a beginner, and the second half if you’ve already got the basics down and want to do more.  If you plan to attend, please request a D2L course account (no later than 72 hours before the workshop) so you’ll have a place in which to work. Request a course account via the D2L Faculty Request Interface. Once you’ve completed your course account request, it’s important that you check http://d2l.losrios.edu to be sure the course is there prior to attending the workshop.  Note – these workshops will be repeated as part of Spring Flex activities on Thursday, January 14th.

D2L for Beginners (9-10AM) – The basics:  D2L interface, content, requesting courses, support, etc.

For Spring 2015:

  • 432 course sections, or 61% of all course sections are linked to D2L course accounts
  • 6,534 (unduplicated) students, or 84% of all students are enrolled in courses linked to a D2L course account
  • 157 faculty from 65 disciplines are using D2L course accounts
  • Approximately 57% of faculty (full and part-time) are using D2L to support online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses

3.  Adaptive Media Design Specialist

The Accessibility and Universal Design Specialist supports faculty in the development of effective online learning environments for online, hybrid, web-enhanced course sections, and in-person courses to ensure that all content and media meet approved web accessibility standards and the principles of Universal Design. The position serves as the main point of contact for support of the college’s *Web Accessibility plan. The position will also develop and deliver training incorporating Universal Design principles for college faculty and staff.

DUTIES

  • Consults with instructional divisions and other departments on standards and best practices for compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG) AA standards for instructional materials and principles of Universal Design.
  • Works with individual faculty members and departments to design accessible online courses and course components, including assessments
  • Develops materials and resources that promote the principles of Universal Design and web accessibility
  • Provides technology based training sessions to individual faculty and small groups as appropriate
  • Serves as main point of contact for college-wide Web Accessibility plan.
